Social Support
For frail and lonely older people considerable benefits accrue from mutual support and sharing.
Bield provides small grants for equipment and facilities to promote social care and events within its 100 plus supported housing developments. This may typically include garden furniture, equipment for lunch clubs, TV/DVDs for social evenings, funding for craft and reminiscence groups. Bield staff and volunteers often help to run lunch clubs, groups and social events.
Silver Surfers is a special initiative introducing older people to computing by developing their PC and IT skills. Bield funds the equipment and running costs. Volunteers act as tutors to provide computer support and initial access to email and the internet.Older people, not least the more lonely and isolated, learn new ways to communicate near and far with family and friends, to access information and to go shopping. It is proposed to increase our silver surfer groups from 10 to 22 over the next three years.
